Where There Fear There Is Power

Where There Fear There Is Power Image
Kenaz Filan has written a nice piece on the issue of the relative value of following (whether closely or not-so-closely) a formalized 'orthodox' system of spiritual practice versus proceeding based on your personal nature, inclinations and interests. The whole thing is worth a read, but there is a quote in it that reminded me of something I've tried to get across to students over the years.

Filan says: "In a self-led spiritual quest, we may never find our way outside our comfort zones and may never account for difficult questions."

Excellent observation! Having spent the first decade of my own occult work in a purely self-directed search (or directed only by conflicting advice in print...), and working with a number of other self-directed occultists. I came to a similar conclusion. A big risk in a self-constructed, ad-hoc approach to spiritual work is that you will only manage to affirm the self you already were when you began, with little growth except perhaps in size. You might become a bigger, shinier, more powerful person of the sort you have always been, but you can also miss the opportunity to balance your natural tendencies against their complementary things. Worse, I've seen folks exaggerate and empower characteristics that might reasonably be discarded, if their goal was a productive and happy life. (If for some reason - artistic soulfulness or some crap - you don't seek a productive happy life then I haven't much to say to you...) This exaggeration of tendencies is, I'll repeat, a real trap of the 'do-what-feels-right' approach to spiritual self-training.

I generally counsel those who take up a new mythic system, or who are just investigating the deep and powerful myths and symbols of the Old Ways to be sure to take careful note of the parts they don't like. What parts repulse and confuse, what Gods or spirits are scary, or even just boring? Those portions of the myths, or symbols, should be given special attention and careful work. There's an old Pagan song that says "Where there's fear there is power." I knew Pagans who, being confused by that, changed the lyric from 'fear' to 'love'. Both things are true but they're very different lessons. When we notice a part of ourselves (or the spiritual world) that frightens us, we should be aware that we've noticed a knot of tension, a reserve of stored energy, busy keeping us tense around our fear. We can get that energy if we can learn the lessons the fear has for us.

The advantage of a well-balanced systematic approach is that it should provide a structure and direct lessons in how to do all of this. I think it's safe to say that not every system intends to balance dark and light, comfort and fear. However every system that has lasted and produced wise people does in fact develop mechanisms for both leading students into the scary places and for coping with the experiences. To me this is one good argument for taking up a formal system. If one rejects a formal system I can only strongly suggest paying careful attention to what you prefer to ignore.

Goddess Isis

Goddess Isis Image
ISIS (pronounced EYE-sis) is the Egyptian Great Goddess, ruler of life and death, magic, and motherhood. The name Isis is the anglicized pronunciation of her Greek name; her Egyptian name was most likely ESET (pronounced ee-set) or AU SET (pronounced oo-set). Her name means "Queen of the throne", and she was seen as the mother of the royal line of Egypt. As her importance grew, aspects of many other Goddesses were incorporated into the person of Isis; at the height of her worship, she ruled over agriculture, anchors, the breath of life, breezes from the North, civilization, conjugal love, the crashing of waves, the cresting and flooding of rivers, cycles, daytime, decay, decline, dreams, the ebb and flow of tides, Egypt (especially the Nile Delta and the city of Alexandria), fate, growth, the heavens, household arts, human affairs, initiation, laws, life, lightning, magic, material reality, maternal love, medical schools, moisture, mooring poles, motherhood, the Mysteries, nature, navigation, necessity, the opening of flowers, orchards, outer space, peace, regeneration, rivers, the sea, sea breezes, seaports, secrets, serpents, sleep, solid form, spells, spirituality, the sprouting of seeds, the stars (especially the northern constellations), storms, thunder, travel by sea, the unfurling of leaves, the waning and waxing of the Moon, war, wind, Words of Power, writing implements, the year, and the entire Universe.

The legend of Isis and Osiris shows how Isis came to rule over death and rebirth, as well as magic and motherhood. Isis and Osiris, along with Nephthys and Set, were the children of Geb, God of the earth, and Nut, Goddess of the sky. Osiris ruled over Egypt with Isis as his wife and queen, and Set ruled the underworld with Nephthys as his queen. Set was jealous of Osiris, and conceived a plan to murder him through trickery. After measuring his brother while he was sleeping, Set had a coffin made to fit Osiris. At a banquet, Set offered the beautifully decorated coffin to any who could fit inside it perfectly. Several tried, but they did not fit. Finally, Osiris was persuaded to try; when he climbed into the box, the lid slammed shut on him. Set had it sealed with lead and flung into the Nile and it was carried out to sea. The coffin washed up in a distant country, coming to rest in the branches of a tree. The branches grew to cover the coffin, and Osiris was sealed up inside the trunk of the tree.

Isis, in her grief, tore her robes to pieces and cut off her long black hair. When she regained her composure, she and her sister Nephthys went in search of Osiris's body, so that he could be buried properly. After years of searching, they found the coffin in the tree, and carried it back to Egypt, where they hid it in a swamp near the Nile. Set happened to come across the box containing his dead enemy, and was infuriated that he had been found. He hacked Osiris's body into 14 pieces and threw them into the Nile, to be eaten by crocodiles.

Again, Isis and Nephthys searched for the pieces of Osiris's body. They found thirteen pieces; the fourteenth, his penis, had been eaten by a crab. Isis, after tricking the God Ra into teaching her his magic, made a penis out of gold and wax for her husband, and brought him back to life long enough to conceive a child. Their son was the God Horus, who eventually revenged his father's murder and took back the rule of Egypt from Set.

Worship of Isis spread from Egypt east through Mesopotamia and Persia, north to Greece and Rome, and even as far as the British Isles, continuing as a mystery cult into the 6th century C.E. Most of the legends we know of her come to us through Greek and Roman historians. As Isis became known in more countries, she acquired more epithets. Indeed, she was even known as Isis of the Ten Thousand Names, as this list of her alternative names shows:

Lemegeton I The Lesser Key Of Solomon Goetia

Lemegeton I The Lesser Key Of Solomon Goetia Cover

Book: Lemegeton I The Lesser Key Of Solomon Goetia by Solomonic Grimoires

Goetia (of Solomon): The Goetia is concerned with the Spirits of evil the evocation of 72 demons associated with the Shemhamphorash, those which Solomon bound to his service. It is worth considering that if it were true that the original grimoire was in fact five books it has also been suggested that the Goetia is the oldest book. It has also been suggested by Elizabeth Butler that the manuscript the Liber Spiritum, and the Liber Officiorum, were earlier names for the Goetia itself. This may then place the Goetia well before the seventeenth Century.

Goetia (of Solomon) is part of Lesser Key of Solomon, (1916) and lists a large number of spirit entities and gives instructions for summoning them. It seems to date from the sixteenth century. For whatever reason, the Lemegeton was not published and existed only in a manuscript version, which Mathers lent to Aleister Crowley. In 1903 Crowley and Mathers had a falling out, and Crowley published Mathers's work in 1904. As with The Key of Solomon, de-Laurence published a pirated American edition.

The Complete Idiots Guide To Wicca And Witchcraft

The Complete Idiots Guide To Wicca And Witchcraft Cover

Book: The Complete Idiots Guide To Wicca And Witchcraft by Denise Zimmermann

An invaluable resource for beginners and adepts alike, this best-selling and frequently Recommended book on wiccan magick and witchcraft has been updated and revised, now featuring a Year-and-a-Day calendar for the solitaire who is beginning to explore Wicca on his or her own.

- Loads of new spells
- New for this edition—a Year-and-a-Day calendar
- Expanded information on creating a personal grimoire and book of Shadows—the witch’s spell manual and "bible"

This guide offers a beginner's look at the history of paganism, Wicca, and witchcraft, from the Druids and Celts to the witches of today who practice an earth-based religion, cast spells, and perform natural magic. The book, written by a practicing witch, reveals details of the witches' Sabbaths, ceremonies, and altars.

Don't get me wrong, fellow pagans, I recommend Cunningham' Guide for a Solitary Practitioner and other well known books. But sometimes it is easy to start from the very beginning. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Wicca and Witchcraft, does just that. It lays the foundation for other works (such as those by Cunningham) to contiune the way. This book introduces you to concepts and theories as well as jargon and even how to lead you in circle casting and ritual work. It presents the information in an easy to understand and comprehend manner. It breaks down complex ideas and explains them to you one piece at a time. It also offers tidbits of information throughout the book that are fun and informative.

This book has gone on my top ten of books to recommend to new people. I also recommend this book to people wanting a refresher on Wiccan basics. Kudos!
