[>] Pictures from Sidi Shaykh Muhammad Sa'id al-Jamal ar-Rifa'i ash-Shadhuli's visit to Del Mar, Southern California, 1st December. 2007. Since 1994 Shaykh visits the United States every year, staying for a few months and traveling the country visiting his beloveds.

Yesterday i had the blessed opportunity to meet the Shaykh, the present guide of the Shadhdhuliyyah Tariqah, affectionately known as Sidi meaning Sir or Teacher. Sidi gave bayat (initiation to sufi path) to new aspirants and i got initiated as well, Alhamdulillah. Shaykh gave each a new sufi name and while gazing lovingly he called me Salim. So there goes my sufi name, Salim. 'Selim' or 'Salim' means "peaceful", "safe", derived from Arabic salima "to be with peace". Its also the same in Hebrew Salem meaning the same.

During the Bayat the Shaykh blessed the new aspirants and helped them say and do tauba, a spiritual, physical and mental process of turning back to God. Shaykh adorned all new aspirants with a beautiful prayer bead or tasbih (rosary) in the initiation ceremony.

Bayat, an Islamic word for allegiance, and the word means "taking hand", a practice mentioned by Quranic Surah 48:10: "Verily, those who give thee their allegiance, they give it but to God Himself, God's hand is upon their hands...". This tradition of the Prophet himself is thus observed for the initiation ceremony specific to many Sufi orders.
